The North Lancashire Road Club was founded in 1950 as a racing offshoot of the North Lancashire District Association of the Cyclists' Touring Club. In 1980 it gave up restricted membership qualification (i.e. CTC members only) in order to develop as a racing club in its own identity. Members of the Club take part in Club Rides and in Time Trials, Road Racing, Track Racing and Cyclo-cross. The Club promotes several Open racing events and holds an annual Luncheon and Prize Presentation.
Membership is open to all at an annual fee of £14.00 (£7.00 for under-18's). Public liability insurance is strongly recommended, through either home contents insurance or by the appropriate membership classification of the British Cycling, CTC or LVRC. The membership fee is payable to the Club Secretary. Membership runs until the 30th of September each year. Anyone interested in the Club may attend a Club night, Club ride or evening Time trial. To join the Club, first contact the Club Secretary. Having made contact you may then complete the application form and print and sign it and send it to the Club Secretary with the correct remittance (new members must be proposed and seconded by 2 current members - applicants can be refused membership by the Club committee but this is very rare.
Regular Club Nights have been discontinued due to low attendance. Last regular Club Night: December 7th 2009The club holds regular rides on Sundays and Tuesdays throughout the year. The distance varies from 50/60 miles in winter up to 70/80 miles in summer. A cafe stop is normal and riders can expect to return home between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Although the group may become stretched out on longer climbs due to variation in the fitness of the riders, regrouping takes place at summits and no one is left behind. The normal meeting place for rides is next to the Dog Inn in the centre of Whalley at the following times:
Sundays: 08:30 (summer), 09:00 (winter: i.e. during GMT)
Tuesdays: 09:30
To confirm the time and date of meetings or club rides ring the Club Secretary.
Training rides
These are NOT official NLRC rides. They are only suitable for the very fit. Riders meet in the centre of Whalley at times which vary though the year (08:00 in autumn and early winter but later in mid-winter). The distance is usually around 70-80 miles with a cafe stop after around 50 miles. Average speed is often in excess of 18 mph. These are not Club runs, riders are there to train and don't want to have to wait for the unfit. Attendance is greatest during December to March. Non-members may join in.
'B' Run: Rides for novices and the less fit
Although not an official North Lancs RC ride, some Club members and friends usually meet on Wednesdays at 9:30 am at Spring Wood picnic site near Whalley (at the junction of B6246 and A671) for an easy paced ride through mainly quite country roads . These rides are a good introduction to Club riding. Those attending usual ride road bikes but mountain bikes are acceptable but will require a little more effort. To confirm that the ride is going to take place ring Harry Haseley on 01254 885611.
During the summer months (early May to mid-August) the Club organises Wednesday evening 10 mile time trials on a course starting near Edisford Bridge, Clitheroe. The events begin at 7.00 pm onwards with riders starting at minute intervals. For more details see the Evening tens page and/or contact the organiser Harry Haseley on 01254 885611 or the Time Trials Secretary.
